Will Call, will ride, will see

My lovely Saturday walk took me to Deep Ellum to explore and complete my NDB* for the day.  In the 102ºF heat, not too much was happening. Stopping in the Wounded Ostrich (first NDB today) for a cold drink and to plot the next place, I saw a man sitting in the corner eating something quite ravenously. I asked him what he just enjoyed and he told me, “The chicken wings across the street are off the chain!” That’s a good enough endorsement for me.

I bid farewell to my newest local bar acquaintances and headed across the street. On the corner of FUN and Main Street, I checked out the yellow menu, saw GLUTEN-FREE wings, and entered this place passing through the high-top tables on the front patio. This is what Will Call boasts on Google: “Your friendly neighborhood bar located in the heart of Deep Ellum at Main & Crowdus. Live music, great atmosphere, and amazing cocktails are offered 7 days a week. We pour drinks. Drinks for nice people. Drinks for my people. Drinks for all the people!” That was good enough for me. This was my second NDB today. I chose a booth at the exposed red-brick wall, not facing a TV screen, and told our fantabulous server, Dayna, what I was there for and what I wanted to eat and drink. Since it’s a ‘cheat day’ on the eating plan, I went all out, ordering the chicken wings (½ lemon pepper and ½ chunky salt) and a mule.

Each time Dayna passed the table, she made sure all was well. I told her my mission today was to eat this food and celebrate some milestones. She graciously congratulated me and moved on to the other tables. Sitting in my seat, warmed by her reaction, and thinking of my next big adventure, I started wondering how did this cool place get its name, Will Call. I met the owner, JR, a terrific, generous, friendly man who has some music industry in his blood so when he took over this bar some years ago, he carried a part of the theatre/music genre with him and named the place Will Call. The vibe is welcoming and lively and the award-winning GLUTEN-FREE fried chicken wings are outstanding!!!! (wings are made with cornstarch and rice flour) https://www.willcalldallas.com/menu

Finishing out the weekend with a quick trip on the DART to Fair Park to see the Broadway play “The Book of Mormon” put me in a grateful and satisfied mental state.

Searching out new places, new faces, and new experiences is my favorite thing about moving, living, and exploring.

How was your weekend?

Aloha🌺,
