Yes, we moved here on Christmas day, 2012. What a grand adventure we’ve been on!! We’ve learned SO much! Made some great friends. Eaten amazing foods. Traveled to nearby countries. Tried, done, bought, experienced things we never thought imaginable. What an amazing journey we’ve enjoyed….
Driving around the island of Abu Dhabi, I saw buildings, people, parks and restaurants with different eyes. I was in the front seat (different from when I’m a taxi or bus passenger); and I was looking more intently at the neighborhoods.
The huge, classy glass building seem to reach for the sky. There are parks in most neighborhoods filled with laughing kids, happy couples and dancing fountains of water.
At the end of our “tour,” we happily ended up at my favorite Vietnamese restaurant, Hanoi, for spring rolls and vegetarian pho with rice noodles.
Have you really noticed your city? Look at the city with new eyes and you may discover new things!
Last night we went to our neighbors’ holiday party…let’s just say I practiced my French and I need more practice!! Welcomed into the sparkly room with cheer by our generous hosts, seasonal lighting and smiles by their beautiful children, I knew it would be a great night. I was right: the food, the music and new friends were perfect! Ooo la la!
Chatting with people from all parts of France and other expats to France was interesting and inspiring. I love finding out why people move and how they find the world. Note: I have found expats are very curious and adventurous people. The lovely woman I spoke with, Angela, painted clear stories in my head about the North part of France, her home country of Canada, and her ancestors’ countries in Asia so vividly that I have changed up my vision board to include all those places!
Making new friends is always in season. Since ’tis the season now, go make more friends!! Ho ho ho
If you’re looking for FUN, try these three (3) tips:
Movies ~ always a nice escape coupled with popcorn ~ are entertaining and even educational. BIG TIP: some theaters have BOGO (buy one get one free.) In Abu Dhabi, with certain bank cards, you enjoy this bonus; also on Tuesdays, the phone company offers a discount. Always ASK the ticket person!!
Parks are a great place to go to read, watch people, walk around, grade papers, or take part in the “event of the day” if there is one. Our central park has science fairs, a fresh fruit/veg market, food vendors and craft fairs. Check out your local parks.
Beaches are my favorite places to go: there is sun AND shade! You can walk, swim, do yoga, wade in the water, watch people, eat ice cream, and enjoy any street event that happens to be scheduled.
